Perry, OH Cornus racemosa – Counties of OhioTM Series of Gray Dogwoods MODERN DAY NATIVES: The best of both worlds! With native plants becoming more desirable in today’s landscape, the Counties of Ohio TM Series of Gray Dogwoods brings together the best new introductions of an old time favorite. Selected for their distinct and versatile forms, 5 new Cornus racemosa make up the Counties of Ohio TM Series and range in size from a ground cover form to a small tree. Each has their own unique qualities, form and function. They have also been chosen for their salt tolerance, resistance to most insects and diseases and their maintenance free characteristics. The Counties of Ohio Series TM consists of: Cuyahoga TM – It can be grown in tree or clump form. It has a vigorous growth habit and a self-scaffolding canopy just perfect for street tree use under utility lines and in smaller tree lawns. Creamy white flowers bloom heavily and have a pleasant musk fragrance. Its dark green, glossy foliage is twice the size of the species and turns a rich burgundy in the fall. Both leaf colors accentuate the brilliant white clusters of berries which are borne on burgundy-red stems in August. Geauga® - An absolute standout in the series, Geauga® naturally forms a dense and compact, fast growing hedge that does not require pruning unless a more formal appearance is desired. Foliage is a very unique black-green color which is highlighted by deep polished mahogany-red new growth Huron® - This compact selection forms a dense, almost perfect globe. It has attractive crisp green foliage which turns burgundy-red in the autumn. Mahoning TM – The strongest grower of the series, Mahoning TM is especially attractive in the winter months when its distinctive gray stems are displayed. It is a dense growing cultivar with a vigorous stoloniferous habit which makes it excellent for banks, slopes, and naturalized areas. Muskingum® - The lowest growing selection of the series, it is a stoloniferous ground cover form. Creamy-white flowers have a lilac-scent and its attractive gray-green foliage changes to a distinctive brick-red in the fall, showcasing its bountiful crop of bright white berries. Excellent as a ground cover, in particular on banks, slopes, naturalized or low maintenance areas. Counties of Ohio TM Series of gray dogwoods are hardy in U.S.D.A. Zone 4. They thrive in full sun and well drained soils but can tolerate shade and wet or dry soils.
Cornus kousa chinensis – Biblical Series TM Chinese Dogwoods THESE DOGWOODS SOAR IN POPULARITY After over 30 years of research and development, Lake County Nursery has introduced the Biblical Series TM of Chinese Dogwoods. Each in the series were derived from the original ‘Milky Way’ dogwood trees made famous by Wayside Gardens. These new cultivars offer today’s gardener advanced disease resistance, significantly larger flowers and fruit, extra vigorous growth habits and exceptional winter hardiness. Most notably, they all came through the 1977-78 blizzards and the 1993 sub-zero temperatures with flying colors, showing no visible tip dieback or winter burn. Their hardiness along with their disease resistance makes them an obvious choice to replace the native dogwoods which have been greatly reduced in number by anthracnose disease. The Biblical Series TM includes: Galilean® - It’s hunter green leaves are enormous in comparison to the species being over twice the size. It’s abundant flowers are bright white, star-shaped bracts that are colossal in size on a distinct horizontal branching structure. Prophet TM – Similar to the species but with superior star-shaped, creamy white flowers borne in heavy clusters in June. We have observed generous amounts of both flower and fruit at the same time in late summer. Rich mahogany-red fall foliage gives way to reveal a showy exfoliating bark for winter interest. Samaritan® - The most vigorous growing variegated dogwood on the market. It has handsome creamy-white and green variegated foliage with no summer leaf scorching. The foliage is showcased in the fall with radiant pink and burgundy hues. It produces prolific brilliant white flowers late spring and early summer. The Biblical Series TM is hardy in U.S.D.A. Zone 4 and is the perfect combination of outstanding beauty and performance. |
